Would you like to earn more money to make ends meet or offset a loss of salary? Whether you have a part-time or full-time job, you have the right to pursue a complementary activity outside your company to increase your income. Elora, the leading network of independent sellers in ready-to-wear fashion, explains how to earn extra income from home and what steps to take.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTRA INCOME?
There are three main types of extra salary:
- Those paid by an employer to their employees
- Those paid by external organizations
- Those linked to a secondary activity
An employer may pay an employee extra income on an exceptional basis (seniority bonus, overtime pay, etc.) or in the form of benefits in kind (company car, access to leisure activities, meal vouchers, etc.).
In some situations, you may also receive an extra salary from an organization other than your employer. As an employee, you may benefit under certain conditions from the activity bonus paid by the CAF, the amount of which varies according to your income. If you are on leave (illness, accident, etc.), social security (CPAM) will handle your compensation. Please note, health insurance only maintains your salary once the waiting period stated in your employment contract has passed. Finally, if you are unemployed, Pôle Emploi is the organization responsible for paying your benefits.
You also have the right to earn money by taking on a side activity, especially as a self-employed entrepreneur. Many independents choose to do this work from home to reduce costs and to make their professional and personal organization easier.
WHAT STEPS SHOULD YOU TAKE TO INCREASE YOUR SALARY BY WORKING FROM HOME?
BEFORE CREATING YOUR SELF-EMPLOYED STATUS
The first step is to check your rights by reviewing the employment contract between you and your current employer. If the activity you want to pursue is similar to the tasks described in your contract, you may be required to inform your employer about the creation of your business as soon as possible, or to abandon your project if you are subject to a non-compete clause. For more security and guarantees, it is sometimes advisable to consult a labor law expert to review your contract.
REGISTERING AS A SELF-EMPLOYED ENTREPRENEUR
To obtain your self-employed status, you must apply online on the URSSAF website. You are required to specify the scope of your activity to obtain your Siret number.
DAY-TO-DAY STEPS FOR A SELF-EMPLOYED ENTREPRENEUR
Unlike an employee, a self-employed entrepreneur is responsible for declaring their income to URSSAF. This declaration can be made monthly or quarterly. Once social contributions are paid to URSSAF, the independent worker can pay themselves a salary.
