WHERE DID THE CRUISE COLLECTIONS COME FROM IN THE WORLD OF FASHION?

From the 1920s and 1930s onwards, cruise collections were originally aimed at a wealthy clientele attracted by high-luxury fashions suited to travel by yacht, steamer or ocean liner.

The long dress, the silk stole, the cashmere jumper, the exceptional leather bag and the fine lace parasol competed for the position of flagship product with elegant women from all over the world, ready to pay top dollar for prestigious fashion pieces, spectacular jewellery and rare perfumes...

Today, the world of luxury and haute couture has retained the concept of cruise collections, which we still dream about, but we also talk about "resort" or "pre-sunny" collections: these are "fashion pre-collections", made up of chic clothes to wear all summer long, which are no longer necessarily guided by the theme of maritime tourism.

These collections still play on the theme of escapism, to our great delight. Presented each summer season, before the Fashion Weeks in September, they are unveiled in the four corners of the world. Luxury brands take advantage of these events to create catwalk shows that are impressive spectacles in extraordinary locations.

In the past, Dior has organised shows in California and Marrakech, while Chanel has chosen to present its cruise collections in venues such as the Grand Palais in Paris, Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul and Havana in Cuba.

For its 2024 Cruise Collection, Dior was inspired by Frida Kahlo, an emblematic figure of the art world whose independent spirit shines through in its creations. Chanel orchestrated colourful fashion shows at the Centre d'art de Marseille, exalting the beauty of its models and accessories with spectacular choreography and video effects. As for Louis Vuitton, its shows this year focused on the poetic charm of Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore in Italy, cultivating a mix of baroque enchantment and an aquatic universe.

These inventive and original collections - not just haute-couture, but ready-to-wear too! - allow the brands' artistic directors and designers to express their full creative potential, outside the constraints of Fashion Weeks, collections and Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer sales catalogues.
