Matching the colours of your clothes
26 JANUARY 2022
Matching the right colours to your clothes is a key step to dressing in style. Choosing the different pieces of your outfit requires a clear vision of the best possible colour combination. Transform a casual look into a trendy style by combining colours correctly. Whether it's a white T-shirt, a beige coat or a burgundy skirt, your Elora women's fashion consultant will explain how to combine colours for a unique look. Discover the best colour combinations to keep you on trend.
Combining basic garment colours
Basic clothing colours are timeless. A white, navy blue or beige dress will always be elegant, as will a cream, grey or black coat. For evening wear, silver or gold tops are also basics you can't go wrong with, whatever your figure.
You don't need to worry about matching neutral colours, from light to dark. However, combining them with stronger tones will make your outfit pop.
These colours are a must in your wardrobe, but on their own, they're not enough to give your wardrobe a dynamic feel.
Neutral colours can also be used for accessories. A pair of black shoes, a white bag, a beige scarf... and your outfit can be adapted to any occasion.
Combining strong colours
If you only have timeless shades in your wardrobe, add a few strong colours. Strong colours include violet, blue, pink, red, yellow, green and orange. All these vibrant shades, often found in summer outfits, will put you in a good mood and enhance your complexion.
If you want to make a statement, treat yourself to some brightly coloured clothes and accessories.
To avoid a fashion faux pas, combine a single bold colour with a basic garment. Play with gradients, but always on the basis of one colour. For example, jeans paired with an electric blue or petrol blue jumper offer superb options for colour block looks.
Combining colours in a cameo
Creating a cameo of colours for your outfit consists of choosing one hue and matching all the shades of that same colour. It's like a total look, but in harmony.
The difficulty? Not all blues go together, and the same goes for all colours. If you're absolutely looking for a green shirt to go with your new emerald jacket and black trousers, don't hesitate to take it with you on your shopping trip to find exactly the right shade.
There's one rule you need to know if you're going to make a mistake: shades go together. In other words, either choose muted tones or bright tones. For example, a pastel blue doesn't go well with a sky blue, whereas a sky blue and an electric blue are a perfect match.
Use a colour wheel to choose beautiful colour combinations. They only need to be very close on the circle to match. For example, you'll find that mauve and blue work well together, as do green and yellow. Always follow the tonality rule. Apple green with canary yellow, but never with a bland chick yellow!
