How to dress eco-responsibly?
15 JANUARY 2021
The textile industry is now known to have a heavy environmental impact, due to polluting production methods, overproduction of raw materials, and the many garments bought that are never worn. While some brands are making real efforts to improve the way the textile industry consumes and produces, we also need to think about our own consumption when we buy. If you want to dress in an eco-responsible, ethical and sustainable way, a few tips will be useful and necessary.
Sorting through the clothes you already own
Dressing in an eco-responsible way doesn't just mean renewing your wardrobe with products from fair trade or made from organic cotton.
Keep your basics, the clothes you really wear every day, even if they're not eco-designed. Recycle and donate the rest to textile collection associations or charities.
Think before you buy
To consume better and dress in an eco-responsible way, you also need to take the time to ask yourself a few questions before buying an item. Do you really want it? Do you need it? Does the colour suit your skin tone?
Before buying an item of clothing, make sure that you will wear it several times and that you will keep it for several years. Changing your buying behaviour will have a positive impact on the textile industry.
How do I buy new clothes?
Choose natural materials such as organic cotton, linen, hemp, etc. and recycled fibres.
If you want to buy a new item of clothing, you can do so in an eco-responsible way. Whenever possible, choose local products, made in France and made in Europe.
Brands committed to eco-responsible dressing
It's easy to recognise an eco-responsible brand, so you can be sure you're buying from the right place. These brands are generally transparent about their values. They produce clothes that last over time, and try to reduce their environmental impact by reducing the proportion of products made in Asia every year.
Taking care of your clothes
To extend the life of your clothes and reduce their carbon footprint, take care of them on a daily basis. Follow washing instructions to the letter, and adopt good care and preservation practices. Ideally, of course, you should know how to sew to repair any holes, add a button or personalise your garment.
To sum up, there are 3 ways to dress in an eco-responsible way. Firstly, by consuming as much, but better, by buying sustainable and eco-responsible clothing. You can also consume less, and better, for an excellent compromise between shopping and caring for the planet. You can also choose to consume nothing at all, by repairing your old clothes or recycling them. Changing your consumption habits is essential if you want to dress in an eco-responsible way. Then it's time to choose the brands you want to wear. For a better world, today and tomorrow, take care of your clothes and your planet.
