What is eco-responsible and sustainable fashion?
08 JANUARY 2021
Eco-responsible and sustainable fashion has been making its way into our wardrobes in recent years, thanks to a general rise in ecological awareness. Responsible fashion encompasses a number of different concepts, including ethical fashion, slow fashion, circular fashion, fair trade fashion and vegan fashion. But the most important thing to remember is that eco-responsible and sustainable fashion respects the environment, people, the planet and everything around us, for a better world today and tomorrow. However, here's a quick overview of the different terms used for responsible fashion.
What is ethical fashion?
Ethical fashion is defined as moral and ethical behaviour. It involves questioning where products come from, how they are made, the means used to produce and distribute them, and the conditions under which these steps were taken. Ethical fashion ensures good working conditions for textile workers, in terms of working hours, pay and respect for workers' rights. It also takes into account animal welfare, environmental impact, a fair price for the consumer, and the quality of the product sold.
Inspired by fair trade and ethical principles, ethical fashion has two main concerns: social and environmental. As an alternative to fast fashion, it is more respectful of people and the environment.
Fair fashion for people
Fair trade fashion is a little different from ethical fashion, because it prioritises working in solidarity with underprivileged populations. Thanks to the commercial partnership with the brand, the workers are paid a fair wage. The social and environmental aspects are also taken into account, depending on the project in question. Fair fashion works mainly during the production of the raw materials and the manufacture of the product, in our case clothes.
Is eco-responsible fashion the fashion of the future?
Using natural, organic, biodegradable, recycled or upcycled materials, eco-responsible fashion promises less polluting manufacturing conditions, with fewer toxic products, a smaller carbon footprint and local production.
Designs are often zero-waste, and made to last you for many years.
Eco-responsible fashion therefore includes very specific approaches and values:
- Transparency;
- Fair trade
- The social economy;
- The collaborative economy;
- Made in France, made in Europe, local trade;
- Organic farming;
- Natural fibres;
- Handmade products;
- Ecology ;
- Recycling;
- Zero waste;
- Vegan.
In the same way, certain aspects of traditional fashion are prohibitive for an eco-responsible fashion brand:
- Intensive crop production;
- The use of toxic products;
- Overproduction;
- Social inequality;
- Child labour;
- Waste;
- Greenwashing.
Eco-responsible fashion aims to promote fashion that is responsible, supportive, ethical and intelligent. By respecting all these values, eco-responsible fashion would like to become the fashion of tomorrow.
Sustainable fashion for long-lasting wardrobes
The concept of sustainable fashion is directly linked to climate change. To preserve resources and limit their use, sustainable fashion also teaches consumers to take care of their clothes: maintenance, repair, bartering, second-hand and recycling. The aim is for clothes to last for many years in the consumer's dressing room, to avoid over-consumption.
Sustainable fashion seems to be a growing trend these days, because environmental concerns are real. The desire to protect the planet for future generations is beginning to emerge as an important factor in the process of buying clothes and accessories. Thanks to responsible, modern collections, consumers can combine their love of fashion and nature.
